Homemade cooking gone frugal :D

It is creeping up on fall here in Ontario, and I feel like stocking my shelves with lovely foods such as homemade jams, canned veggies and fruit and baked goods that make my home smell more countryish.

I am going to be creating a list of my favorite recipes that are fairly easy to make and will save you a pile of cash... and since I have 5 kids, saving cash is fairly important. BUT, it also means less store packaging which makes it more eco friendly and will keep a lot of packages out of the trash, especially if you use glass jars or reusable containers instead of some other types of packaging.

First off, my fave recipe ever, since it saves me the most money and garbage, plus is uber healthy and I know exactly what is going into my babies bellies.

Yogurt
My very own recipe is as follows.

Ingredients:
organic 2% or 3% milk
organic plain yogurt with probiotics, or some from previous batch
vanilla, jam or other preserve to add in after for flavour
storage jars (store containers with lids work well)

Take a single bag of milk, pour into a large pot or microwavable bowl.
Heat either on stove or in microwave until frothy or boiling.
Remove from heat before it boils over and let set on counter until warm enough to insert a finger without burning. It will be hot so be careful.
Once it has cooled, remove 1 cup of the warm milk and place into a separate bowl or cup, add 1tbsp of the premade yogurt and whisk.
Once it has been whisked well, add it to the warm milk and whisk together until well mixed and pour into storage cups or jars, seal with the lids.
Place your sealed jars into the oven with the light on overnight(or on a counter in a warm room, or you can insulate them with towels). You must keep them warm to allow the cultures to do their thing.
Refrigerate them once morning comes.VOILA!!! Your homemade yogurt is ready to consume. Scoop out a serving, add a bit of jam and stir or add it to your favourite recipe.

Home Made Ice cream

mix your creams together in a large bowl, add your sugar and vanilla and stir until sugar is dissolved. You are ready to click the link to learn how to mix it... How to Make Ice Cream (click Here)
